Maude’s 100th Birthday Party

March 13, 2012

When somebody you love turns 100, you throw a party.  That’s just how it goes.  Michael’s great-grandma Maude passed that milestone last week, and her giant birthday fête happened on Sunday.  Since Michael’s mom is living overseas right now, we took over as party-planners and throwers.

Serging My Way Back To You, Babe

March 8, 2012

I was so scared of our serger.  You know how you get scared of unfamiliar things, mainly because you don’t understand them?  That’s heavy, right?  Well, I didn’t have time to read the serger manual and get properly acquainted with it, so I was living in fear of the potential for disaster that the machine [...]

January 1, 2012

Happy New Year.  I have high hopes for 2012.  My hopes boil down to more of the good stuff and less of the bad stuff from prior years.  That isn’t too much to ask, right?

Happy Holidays 2011

December 24, 2011

Happy holidays and hugs and love, chocolate, naps on couches, brisk walks outside, snuggly pets, Brussels sprouts (I love them), slide shows, spiced nuts, after-dinner games, after-dinner dinner drinks, and citrus fruit. The picture above was our runner-up holiday family photo, but we’re having second thoughts.  This one really is the best, but hindsight is [...]

Last-Minute Holiday: Map-Wrapped Gifts

December 23, 2011

Our house is not big enough and our basement is not tidy enough to store wrapping paper.  That’s my excuse for not using store-bought wrapping paper, but my real reasons are that I cannot abide spending money on it and I don’t like the waste.  Instead, I usually find something else lurking in the shadows [...]
