Lavender Shortbread Cookies with Strawberry Dust

March 10, 2016

These were over-the-top delicious.  You wouldn’t (or I wouldn’t) think the non-chocolate cookies would steal the show, but these do, both for eating and looking.  Rich, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth shortbread spiked with aromatic lavender is finished off with a dusting of intensely tangy and fruity strawberry powder.  That all adds up to Lavender Shortbread Cookies with […]

Coconut Rose Marshmallows

February 11, 2016

I had no idea marshmallows could taste exotic and mysterious.  Well, more exotic than mysterious, but these Coconut Rose Marshmallows do just that.  They are creamy and coconutty, sweet and fragrant. The rose subtly complements the coconut rather than tasting like you’re eating perfume.

Little Cardamom Cookies

February 5, 2016

I don’t know how these are so good.  The recipe only has 9 ingredients and these come together like any other rolled-out cookie, but they’re fantastic.  Little Cardamom Cookies are fragrant, exotic, buttery, and “get more of these in my mouth”-ish all at once.

Chocolate Toffee Bars

January 28, 2016

We took Chocolate Toffee Bars to the beach a couple weeks ago, as a substitute for our usual WT Bars.  Guess what.  They’re really good.  I don’t think I need to convince you.  If heath bar toffee bits, chocolate, and a shortbread-y crust appeal to you, you should already be sold on these treats.

Vanilla Bean Prosecco Jello Squares

January 21, 2016

We hosted an open house a while back and it wasn’t super classy.  Our dining table was full of good food and the fridge was full of drinks and everything was casual and homey.  Alcoholic jello just seemed like the right thing to do, so I made a batch of Vanilla Bean Prosecco Jello […]

Strawberry Marshmallows

January 15, 2016

My mom loves marshmallows.  She used to buy them for herself, but hasn’t in the past few years because I “ruined” store-bought marshmallows for her.  I make a batch as her Christmas present every near now, and it is so easy I probably should make another mid-year batch to ward off her cravings.  This Strawberry […]

Hungarian-ish Cucumber Salad

January 8, 2016

I’ve never been to Hungary, but I’d like to go.  Novak’s Hungarian Restaurant was my favorite place to go for a special occasion as a kid, and I have no reason to believe the entire country wouldn’t be an even more delicious version on Novak’s.  One of the standby side dishes on the Novak’s menu […]

Eggnog Creme Brûlée

January 6, 2016

My husband is an avid eggnog enthusiast.  In his opinion, nog season runs from the day after Thanksgiving until the grocery store quits carrying discounted cartons of the stuff a week after Christmas. He is equal opportunity with his affections, trying whole milk, low-fat, coconut milk, rice milk, and soy eggnogs.  My favorite is Mom’s […]

Mexican Hot Chocolate Pudding

December 23, 2015

This pudding will charm you with all the virtues of Mexican hot chocolate.  It is deeply chocolatey, thick and rich, and has the added spice and warmth of cinnamon and cayenne.  A fluff of whipped cream on top cuts through the richness just a bit.

Soy Sauce Eggs

December 17, 2015

We recently hosted a dinner based entirely on Nancy Singleton Hachisu’s Japanese Farm Food cookbook.  Everything tasted good, a few of the recipes were repeaters, and one was the absolute winner of the night.  Soy Sauce Eggs.  This was the easiest, simplest, most make-ahead dish of the meal, and it is the one we all loved […]
