Brieracha Sandwich

May 17, 2012

Do you know what’s great about taking something fancy that tastes really good and trashing it up a little?  It still tastes really good, but maybe even better because the trashy part adds a whole new dimension of delicious.  Classy and trashy are the perfect combination, just like Lady and the Tramp (except he was [...]

Spinach Lemon Sorbet

May 15, 2012

Portland is unseasonably scorching hot right now.  I know this because I’ve let my dog outside to soak up sun, then let her back inside to cool off her baked little brains.  Repeatedly.  Here at the Powell Parich house, we’re staying cool inside.  We opened our windows overnight, shut them this morning, and that, teamed [...]

Hibiscus Flower Syrup

May 12, 2012

I called my mom to vent about frustrations yesterday.  She let me blather for 15 minutes straight about issues totally unrelated to her, just because she’s my mom and she’s there for me.  In the mom lottery, I hit the jackpot.  When I was under 4′ tall (and that was a very long stretch of [...]

Sourdough Egg Bowls

May 8, 2012

I don’t even know what to call this.  Sourdough bread egg bowl?  Eggs in cocotte in bread?  Egg/bread bomb?  Honestly, it is kind of a disaster in a cute little package.  Don’t get me wrong–it is a delicious disaster, but this is one of those experiments that I didn’t think I’d be photographing.

Matcha Chocolate Whoopie Pies

May 1, 2012

Do you remember How Stella Got Her Groove Back?  Me neither.  I never saw the movie; back in 1998 I was too busy riding my impossibly heavy 1950s bike around town, decked out in an ill-fitting vintage dress and black converse.  The title, however, sticks in my brain.  Variations of it tend to pop out [...]

Walnut Cacao Shortbread Cookies

March 29, 2012

My brain is so full right now.  My to-do list is also full, but I’m slowly, diligently ticking items off the list.  When I get ready for anything, I make copious lists and can’t slow my tangled-up brain.  We leave for a trip soon, so I’m really into crossing things off lists.

Low-Commitment Projects: Just Like the Picture

March 26, 2012

Just Like the Picture was one of the most fun Low-Commitment Projects to work on so far.  I actually made myself chuckle while photographing these recreations of food packaging photos, plus it resulted in a fridge chock full of meals.  The Grape Nuts photo was the first one I did and is my favorite by far.  It totally [...]

Chocolatey Peanut Butter Oatmeal No-Bake Cookies

March 25, 2012

I don’t want to tell you how many batches of these Chocolatey Peanut Butter Oatmeal No-Bake Cookies I’ve made in the past month or two.  Let’s just say I might need more than one hand to count.  I’d like to blame Michael.

Sunchoke Fennel Soup

March 22, 2012

Sometimes I get my vegetables confused.  Rapini vs broccoli rabe vs broccolini–what the what?  I don’t remember whether I’d cooked with sunchokes prior to this soup.  Part of the issue is their alternate moniker:  Jerusalem artichokes.  Maybe I’m confusing them with celeriac, which sometimes travels under the pseudonym celery root.  Grr.  Can’t we have a [...]
